The Cincinnati Civic Garden Center
Our mission is building community through gardening, education and environmental stewardship. Founded in 1942 out of the Victory Garden movement, we are THE place to go in Cincinnati to learn about gardening, sustainability, and horticulture. We are located at 2715 Reading Road on the former estate of Cornelius J. Hauck, Hauck Botanic Gardens. Here we host classes, a horticultural library, several gardens for visitors to enjoy free of charge, the Green Learning Station and an outdoor compost classroom; the building and grounds are available for event and meeting rental.

The Master Gardener training course consists of a minimum of 50 hours of instruction. An equivalent number (50) of horticulturally significant volunteer hours within 1 year following the initial instruction is required to become a certified Master Gardener. Those hours must be contributed to programs directly sponsored by OSU Extension, Hamilton County (Extension programs). Master Gardeners may re-certify by completing 20 additional hours of public service and 10 hours of advanced educational training each year. Only unpaid public service in Ohio State University Extension-sponsored activities count toward the requirement.

In the Sustainable Horticulture program students learn sustainable landscape techniques and technologies including design, implementation, and management of green roofs and green walls; stormwater management best practices; sustainable choices in plant materials; and use of alternative energy systems in landscapes.

Students complete foundation courses in landscape horticulture and environmental science, and then take additional technical courses in sustainable horticulture. Core business courses prepare students for leadership roles in local businesses and municipalities, while cooperative education employment experiences allow students to further develop their knowledge in positions with companies utilizing sustainable horticulture.
